6. and, in our last broadcast, we left Moses, Aaron and Miriam in the tent meeting.

7. Miriam and Aaron used rumor and misguided criticism to try to take leadership away from Moses.

8. They were jealous of his leadership,

9. and they were not honest in their criticism.

10. Furthermore, they incited their people by saying that Moses’ wife had dark skin and the marriage was wrong;

11. but Moses reacted with meekness, exercising strength under control.

12. Now, I want you to listen to the rest of the story.

13. God did not like what was happening,

14. and, had God not acted, we would probably never have heard of this incident;

15. but God was displeased with what was going on.

17. Meekness does not mean that we do not confront some situations.

20. That is not what it means at all;

21. but you have your confrontations out of strength, under control, not out of anger.

22. You do it out of compassion, mixed with inner security, not revenge.
你满怀同情，有内心的平安，而不是出于仇恨。
23. You do it out of courage, mixed with confidence, not vengeance.

24. In fact, Moses’ reaction to God’s chastisement of Miriam was an incredible act of meekness.

25. Let me tell you about it.

26. Miriam complained about the blackness of her sister-in-law,

27. so God made her real white with leprosy.

29. What did Moses do?

30. Weakness would have said, “Well, Miriam, you got what’s coming to you.”

31. Weakness would have said, “You deserve what you got.”

32. Weakness would have said, “You got your just reward...”

33. but meekness, which is strength under control, sent Moses on his knees to pray for Miriam’s healing.

34. The Book of Numbers, Chapter 12, verse 13.

35. “So Moses cried out to the Lord, ‘O, God, please heal her.’”

36. You know, there are some people who toot their own horn,
你知道，有些人为自己吹号，
37. bang on their own drum,
为自己敲锣打鼓，
38. protect their little kingdoms,
来维护自己的小王国，
39. and brag about their exploits.
自吹自擂。
40. That is weakness.
实际上，这是懦弱的表现。
41. The moment you see or hear that, recognize it for what it is. It is not biblical meekness, but weakness.
当你看到或者听到这样的表现时，你要能辨别这是怎么回事，这不是圣经所说的温柔，而是懦弱。
42. Those who truly achieve success,
那些真正成功的人，
43. those who truly have been given honors, but see no necessity to tell anyone,
那些真正得到人们敬重的人都知道，没有必要四处去宣扬，
44. those are who are truly meek.
这才是真正的谦卑。
45. Some time ago, one of my friends was given an honorary doctorate,
以前，我的一个朋友得到荣誉博士的头衔，
46. and I found out about it.

47. He called me and said,

48. “I am glad you knew about it, but please don’t tell anybody else...”

49. and I kept my mouth shut.

50. His modesty was strength, which is true meekness,

51. because meekness is not weakness.

52. The second thing I want to tell you about meekness is that it is not false modesty.
我想告诉你有关温柔的第二件事，就是它不是虚伪的谦虚。
53. I want you to listen very carefully to what I’m going to tell you.
请你仔细听我说。
54. False modesty is more dangerous than bragging.
虚伪的谦虚比自我吹擂更危险。
55. Why?

56. because it is harder to detect,

57. because it looks like meekness.

58. While bragging is weakness because it is the opposite of meekness,

59. but false modesty is a look-a-like to meekness and that is why it’s much more difficult to discern.

60. Let me explain.

61. God has given each of us at least one gift.

62. Some have more —two or three or four— or maybe even multiple gifts.

63. If you don’t know what your gift is,
如果你不知道你有什么恩赐，
64. you are under obligation before God to discover what it is and use it.
你有责任在神面前发掘你的恩赐，并好好使用它。
65. What is God saying when He gives each of us one of these gifts or talents?
神给我们每个人这些恩赐，或者才干时说什么？
66. He is saying, “You are worthwhile.”
祂说，“你是值得的。”
67. He is saying, “You are important to Me.”

68. He is saying, “You have a value to Me.”

69. He is saying, “You have a uniqueness because I made you in My own image;”

70. and, for the believer, He is saying, “I have redeemed you through the blood of My Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.”

71. He is saying, “You are special to Me.
祂说，“你在我眼中，是很特别的。
72. You are of value to Me...”
你对我而言是有价值的……”
73. so, what does false modesty do?
然而，虚伪的谦虚是怎样的呢？
74. False modesty and self-deprecation and refusal to stand up for anything is a denial of God-given gifts,
虚伪的谦虚和贬低自我的人，以及没有自己立场的人，都对神的恩赐予以否定。
75. as if to say, “God, You are lying.”
好像在说，“神啊，你在撒谎。”
76. I told you, false modesty is dangerous.
我告诉你，虚伪的谦虚是很危险的。
77. Far from it being a true virtue, false modesty is a substitute for passive selfishness.
不但不是真正的美德，虚伪的谦虚就等于是消极的自私。
78. I want to repeat this.

79. Far from being a true virtue, false modesty is a substitute for passive selfishness.

80. When someone gives an excellent speech and, then, would say, “Oh, that was nothing...”

81. or, when a singer who is truly gifted of God and would say, “I am just getting over a cold,”
或者，当一个很有天才的歌手说，“我刚感冒过……”
82. that is false modesty.

83. I have a friend and a colleague who is a great encourager.
我有一个朋友也是同事，他很会鼓励人。
84. He comes to me after I speak and says, “This was a great message.”

85. My response is always, “They all are.”

86. You might ask if I am bragging.

87. No, no, no.

88. Listen to me. I want you to listen very carefully,

89. because this is of vital importance.

90. When you have nothing, and everything comes to you as a gift, you have nothing to brag about.

91. When you have nothing to brag about, and everything is given to you, how can you brag about a gift?

92. Can you imagine if someone would walk up to me and give me a gift,
你能想像如果某人来到我这里，送我一件礼物，
93. and I stretch my hand and receive the gift?
我伸出手，就接受了这件礼物吗？
94. Someone would say, “Wow! I like that way you stretched out your hand and received that gift.
一些人会说，“哦，我很喜欢你伸出手，收下这份礼物的样子。
95. That was wonderful.
真是好极了。
96. This was really nice.
的确很不错。
97. I’d like to see you stretching out your hand again.”
我希望看到你再次伸出手来。”
98. All I did is stretch out my hand and receive the gift.
我只不过是伸出我的手，接受了这件礼物。
99. I haven’t done anything else.
我没有做任何其它的事情。
100. Everything I have is a gift from God;
我所拥有的一切都是神所赐予的；
101. therefore, I have nothing to brag about.
因此，我无可吹嘘。
102. I’ve got nothing that I can truly take credit for.
我所得到的东西，都不是自己的功劳。
103. Everything we have is a gift from God, and only God needs to get the glory.
我们拥有的每样东西都是神赏赐的，唯有神配得这个荣耀。
104. If I make a mistake, it would be because of my laziness,
如果我做错了一件事，可能是因为我懒惰，
105. or, because I’m not using God’s gift.
或者，我没有使用神给予的恩赐。
106. Otherwise, anything that is good is a gift from God.
否则，任何好的东西都是从神而来的赏赐。
107. Someone said the following:

108. “The essence of meekness and gentleness is a capacity to value others as much as we value ourselves.”

109. The Apostle Paul commands Timothy to exercise biblical meekness.

110. Look at 2 Timothy, Chapter 2, verses 24 and 25.

112. Paul is saying, "Correct your opponents with gentleness."

113. On the one hand, we don’t ignore their error out of false modesty by saying, “Well, who am I to correct them?”

114. or, “Who am I to point out the error of their ways?”

115. or, “Who am I to bring this to their attention?”

116. On the other hand, he said not to lord it over them.

117. He is not to say, “You do it or else...”

118. or, “You are not as good as me...”

119. or “What you need to do is to work harder and reach my standards.”

120. No, no, no, no.

121. That is not the way to do it.

122. Although we often don’t use these words, we often use more subtle words, but the effect is the same.
尽管通常我们不用这样的语气，我们会说得委婉些，但最终的效果是一样的。
123. Neither extreme is truly biblical meekness.
这两种极端，都不是圣经所说的温柔。
124. Meekness is not weakness.
温柔不是懦弱。
125. False modesty is not meekness.

126. I want to tell you a story, as I conclude this message.

127. It is a true story to illustrate true biblical meekness.

128. Booker T. Washington was a black American man who knew all about true biblical meekness and gentleness.
华盛顿布科先生，是一位明白圣经所说的温柔和谦卑的美国黑人。
129. Born in 1856, he worked in a coal mine as a child,

130. taking only three months a year to go to school.

142. He took off his coat,

144. and carried it into her house,

145. and refused payment.

146. Later, when the woman discovered who he was, she went to his office to apologize;

147. but Washington said, “It’s all right. I delight in doing favors to my friends.”

148. That woman not only became a generous supporter of the Institute, but she left her entire estate to the Institute;

149. and Washington, himself, went on to advise several American Presidents, and had written a number of books.

151. I’m not going to argue with you, but I’m going to tell you this:

152. Booker T. Washington knew and used true biblical meekness -- that is, strength under control.

153. He understood and demonstrated his strength through his gentle response to life’s challenge.

154. Jesus said, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

155. Do you know what it is to be meek?

156. You can only experience meekness when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, moment by moment.

157. When I face the challenges of life, I often ask the Lord to fill me with His Holy Spirit;

158. but, sometimes, the enemy sneaks up on you and surprises you, as he has a habit of doing.
但有时，敌人会偷偷来到你身边，惊吓你，因为他常常都是这么做的；
159. “Lord Jesus,

160. let this particular fruit, that I need right now, be manifested in me.”
请让这个特别的果子，是我现在正急需的，在我里面彰显出来。”
161. God will answer this prayer;

162. then, and only then, can the fruit of meekness begin to manifest itself in your life.
